Managing Perception in Difficult Dialogues

Difficult dialogues include conflict mediation and various instances of intercultural/ethnic communication where there are consequential differences in principles and/or power. Interlocuters in those circumstances frequently attribute differences in perception to the bad character, low intelligence, or defective philosophy of the other party; therefore, facilitation of dialogue in these cases necessitates an active management of perceptual processes. This session demonstrates an effective strategy for doing that, drawing on the classic distinction from General Semantics of Description, Inference, Judgement and the derived training exercise in Intercultural Communication of Description, Interpretation, Evaluation (DIE). Participants will acquire techniques for unobtrusively introducing this perceptual management tool into normal facilitation.

In addition to his Ph.D. in Intercultural Communication, Milton J. Bennett has a two-year MA in psycholinguistics, where he was schooled in General Semantics and human perception theory. In his ensuing academic and consulting career, he has conducted numerous facilitator training programs, including nearly 20 years of guiding the facilitation of Intercultural Communication Workshops and recent work with the South African group, Conflict Dynamics. Back in the day, he was the co-creator of the DIE exercise.

Was ist die beste Taktik bei Vergleichsgesprächen im Rahmen einer Wirtschaftsmediation, eines staatlichen Verfahrens und einem Schiedsverfahren – und was sind die Unterschiede je nach Forum?

Die Schweizer Kammer für Wirtschaftsmediation (SKWM) und die ASA Local Group Central Switzerland organisieren dazu eine Podiumsdiskussion mit Experten aus den drei Gebieten zum Thema “Verhandlungstaktiken – Wirtschaftsmediation, staatliche Verfahren und Schiedsgerichtsbarkeit“.

Mediation erlebbar machen – das neue Lernvideo der HSLU ist fertig

Von der Vision zur Filmpremiere

Die Idee für das Lernvideo kam nicht über Nacht. Susann Bongers, Dozentin an der Hochschule Luzern, und Daniel Girsberger, Professor an der Universität Luzern, haben im Rahmen eines Kooperationsprojekts erkannt, dass es an zeitgemässen und praxisnahen Lehrmaterialien zur Mediation mangelt. Diese Erkenntnis war der Anstoss, ein neues, modernes Lernformat zu entwickeln, das die Konfliktlösung von A bis Z zeigt und gleichzeitig didaktisch wertvoll ist.

Einzigartige Herangehensweise

Das Lernvideo wird nicht nur die verschiedenen Phasen einer Mediation darstellen, sondern auch spezifische Methoden zeigen, die in anderen Materialien nicht ausreichend behandelt werden. Mithilfe einer Kombination aus deutschen und schweizerischen Darstellenden, die sowohl in der Theaterkunst als auch in der Mediation erfahren sind, wird eine authentische und ansprechende Darstellung gewährleistet.

Am schweizerischen Tag der Mediation laden wir Sie ein, mit uns die Premiere zu feiern und Sequenzen aus dem Video zu schauen.

SCCM Congress 2025 – Future of Conflict Resolution

In the global competition between nations, values that were thought to be secure are being called into question. We are seeing increasing tensions and contradictions. Is a new culture of negotiation now also taking hold in business? How is it possible to remain co-operative in competitive situations and conflicts?

Prominent speakers will try to find answers to these questions during keynote speeches and workshops and at the same time familiarise the participants with the important techniques required; A ‘must’ for all those professionally involved in conflict management, mediation, and leadership.

The conference will be opened by Ambassador Tim Enderlin, Head of the Peace and Human Rights Division at the State Secretariat of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA). Further speakers are:

You also have the opportunity to participate in a simulation event (Markus Berg, Susann Bongers, Daniel Girsberger and Gabriela Renggli), to influence the course of a mediation and to intervene.

The event begins on Friday 5th of September 2025 at the Radisson Hotel in Lucerne. Day 2 will take place at the University of Lucerne.
