The Green Pledge for Mediators and the Edinburgh Declaration: What Can Mediators Do?

The Green Pledge for Mediators and the Edinburgh Declaration are two projects initiated by John, which he will describe in more detail during this morning session.  The first is an environmentally-driven initiative, calling on mediators to commit to working in sustainable, efficient and cost-effective ways to resolve disputes and other differences.  It is a way for the mediation community addition to “walk the talk” when it comes to helping address and find solutions for climate change issues, and consider ways in which mediators could address climate change in their own behaviours and practices.  The second is a call to the international mediation community to consider how we, as mediators, might look outward and work towards a “new enlightenment” in the tradition of the great Scottish Enlightenment of the 18th and early 19th centuries, and how we might all work together with certain principles in mind, as enshrined in this declaration.

For those who have not yet had the pleasure of meeting John or hearing him speak yet, we have a rare treat in store for you.  John is not only a leading international mediator, but a person to aims to make a difference.  John is a Queen’s Counsel barrister, recognised by WhosWhoLegal as a Global Elite Thought Leader in mediation with a practice extending to Europe, the Middle East and Africa. He handles major commercial, business, senior management and other sensitive or complex disputes and is acknowledged by peers and clients as an innovator and excellent communicator. John is a Distinguished Fellow of the International Academy of Mediators and, in recognition of his work, received the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from Edinburgh Napier University in 2010. He was appointed a Visiting Professor at the University of Edinburgh in 2016. In 2018, he was commissioned by the Scottish Government to conduct a review of allegations of bullying and harassment in NHS Highland. His 2019 report was well received across the public sector. He served on the Stewarding Group of Scotland’s first Citizens’ Assembly. He is the founder of Collaborative Scotland and one of the leaders of the Mediators’ Green Pledge movement.  He has been listed in the top tier of commercial mediators in Chambers Guide and described as “as a leading figure in the UK mediation market….flexible in his approach and … always remaining sensitive to the differing interests of the parties involved”, a “fantastic listener” and “a wonderful communicator with much experience of complex commercial issues”.
